Fourth of July- Hanover Beach Style

*Warning- photo overloaded post*

For as long as I can remember, we have been celebrating July 4th with my dad’s side of the family at Hanover Beach, IN. It is extremely hard for me to describe this annual family vacation in words. What I can say is that I wish this type of fun-filled, care-free, non-stop laughing, family bonding vacation for everyone on this earth- it’s that good for the soul. With that being said, I am so proud to be an American and to have spent this holiday exactly as it should be spent- cherishing time with my loved ones, eating good food, dancing, laughing and celebrating freedom.

^Lane and I had everyone at our house for Mother’s Day. Lane steams shrimp like it’s his day job so we had full hearts and tummies! Nolan was cracking everyone up with his interactions with Roux. He didn’t know what to think of him at first, but they played really well together, so I was a proud pup mom! (Roux makes it easy ūüėČ )

^We completely surprised my dad, stepmom and the twins over Memorial Day weekend  and showed up at the house on Thursday afternoon. Kaley was the only one in on it since we needed an insider to help make sure it was successful. I will never forget their faces, priceless! Friday graced us with sunshine and cloudless skies, so by noon, dad was off work and we hit disappearing island! The number one thing I miss being so far away from them is our boating days, so I was so grateful to get out there.

Living Room

We got our new chair today! [Insert happy dance.]

Arm Chair

When Lane and I went furniture “browsing” and ultimately ended up ordering this chair, we didn’t really have a set style in mind. We already have a nice leather recliner in the room and I wanted something that would look good¬†next to it in the den. The very large, oversized armchair that had been filling the space, aka Roux’s favorite nap spot, had to go. I envisioned a very neutral, upholstered arm-chair and Lane’s only real requests were that it would be a.) comfortable and b.) a recliner. With that in mind we tested out almost every chair in the store. Some I loved and with tons of excitement I would call out to Lane from across the store, “BABE! Come see this one!” only to see him respond with his oh-so-handsome stank face. (Actually this also happened on a few occasions with our roles reversed, but that’s only natural, right?!) We finally narrowed it down to a¬†few different options and with the help of the sales lady, we settled on this one. It rocks, reclines and is super comfortable. On top of that, we got to sift through¬†hundreds of fabric swatches for this particular chair so that we¬†could customize it to exactly what we wanted. This is where the stank-faces¬†came back into play. I envisioned a neutral linen type fabric and Lane thought everything I picked was¬†all super boring. To settle, we decided on a patterned design, but one that was neutral enough to blend in with our¬†other pieces in the room.Detail of Arm Chair

^I love the fabric detail on this one. It is actually different shades of green woven together.

Fireplace Plantation Map Entryway

^The den-side of our double-sided fireplace, (a constant work-in-progress…what is it about mantles that make them so intimidating?) the map we found at an antique shop that shows¬†all of the plantations along the Mississippi river back in the 1830s (Lane’s father built the frame, stained it and then had the glass added for us) and then our entry way table.

I always gravitate towards the softer blues and greens when it comes to decorating my house. Our main living areas all feature pops of green with other neutrals mixed in. ¬†Our bedroom is shades of soft blues with hints of gray. There is something so calming about the blue/green family. My number one goal for our current home and any future homes we may have is to keep things super livable and comfortable, but also reflect our own little eclectic style. Our home is a mixture of¬†hand-me-downs and antiques with new finds that have that same feel. I can’t really pin point my style, but that’s what I love about it, mixing the old with the new and the trendy with the classic.¬†

Father’s Day

There is something about the bond between a dad and his daughter.

First LookFirst Look First LookFirst Look

I’ll never forget the moment my father and I shared the day of my wedding as we did our own “first look”. He was standing with his back to me on the front porch of my gorgeous venue, Maison Lafitte. As I walked out onto that porch and he turned around, the flood gates opened for both of us.¬†I believe the first words out of my mouth were, “Stoppppp, dad! You’re making me do my ugly cry!” The wedding day jitters due to¬†this large production of moving parts all seamlessly coming together for you’re “best day ever” is a lot to take in. My dad gave me a sense of calm every step of the way with an added comedic relief, as he has always done throughout my life. It is a memory I will¬†treasure¬†always.

Happy Father’s day, Dad! I love you so much! I also love that we are on the same page about me being your favorite. ūüėČ

Wedding Picture  To my step-dad, JT who loves my brother and I like his own, thank you for being you and for putting up with me through all my moments. cough, cough: high school mornings Thank you for everything you have done and continue to do for us, we are so lucky to have you.

Family Wedding PictureAnd to my father-in-law, Bud. I will always laugh at your jokes even when nobody else in the family thinks it’s funny. Thank you for raising Lane to be the man that he is today.

Lane and RouxLast, but certainly not least… Happy Father’s Day to my Laney-boo, who is the best daddy to our little Roux man. One day, it won’t be a fur-baby we’re talking about and there is no doubt in my mind that you will be the best of the best!

Hey Stranger!

Well, well, well… we meet again.

Everything that made me want to start this blog is everything that has kept me away these past few weeks. To say that we have been busy would be an understatement, but I started this blog to capture all of our memories and, in a way, preserve them for us to look back on in the future. My downfall has been that instead of taking time to post all of the fun stuff we have been up too, I got caught up in life and just like that, POOF!, May and most of June has come and gone. Exactly what I didn’t want to happen, dang-it!¬†The transition from spring to summer seriously flew by in the blink of an eye and to justify this to myself, I will just say that we have been nonstop on the weekends and then by the time I get home on my work days, blogging isn’t my top priority. (Not that any of my 10 followers have noticed my absence, but¬†I will be working to hold myself more accountable in the future.)

Life is such a balancing act between living in the moment and capturing the moment to remember and reflect in later days. #thestruggleisreal

ONLY 4 MORE DAYS TILL THE WEEKEND!

Weekend Recap

LILIES

FRIDAY I CAME HOME TO SOME SWEET SURPRISES. LANE, WHO HAD STAYED IN NEW ORLEANS THURSDAY NIGHT FOR GUYS NIGHT WITH OUR BROTHER-IN-LAW, SURPRISED ME FRIDAY EVENING AFTER WORK WITH BEAUTIFUL LILIES AND A DELICIOUS MEAL.

STEAK AND VEGGIES

THEN,¬†ONE OF MY LONG-TIME BEST FRIEND’S, KORISSA, ASKED ME TO BE A BRIDESMAID BY SENDING ME A PERSONALIZED TUMBLER FILLED WITH AN OPI NAIL POLISH, AN eos LIP BALM AND A RING POP.

BRIDESMAID GIFT

^SERIOUSLY, HOW CUTE!!

KORISSA LIVES IN CHARLESTON AND WORKS FOR A SALON, KILLING IT AT HAIR AND MAKEUP. SHE GENEROUSLY GIFTED ME MY HAIR AND MAKEUP FOR MY WEDDING WEEKEND AND THE RESULTS SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES. A FEW WEEKS AGO, HER BOYFRIEND, JORDAN, PROPOSED AND I COULD NOT BE HAPPIER FOR THEM! THEY HAVE SET A DATE FOR NEXT APRIL AND I AM ALREADY COUNTING DOWN TO THE CELEBRATIONS!

IT’S CRAZY TO BE AT¬†THE AGE WHERE YOU AND YOUR FRIENDS ARE GETTING MARRIED. WHEN LANE AND I GOT ENGAGED SEPTEMBER 2013, ONE OF MY OTHER BEST FRIENDS, YASMINA, GOT ENGAGED 2 DAYS LATER AND ALTHOUGH THEY HAVEN’T SET A DATE YET, THEY WILL BE ANOTHER 2016 WEDDING. LOVE IS DEFINITELY IN THE AIR AND I AM SO GRATEFUL FOR THAT BECAUSE HAVING BEST FRIENDS WHO ALL LIVE IN DIFFERENT STATES CAN DEFINITELY BE HARD, BUT WEDDINGS BRING US ALL TOGETHER AND CLOSER IN WAYS WE DIDN’T EVEN KNOW WAS POSSIBLE!

ON SATURDAY, WE¬†WOKE UP TO THUNDERSTORMS AND ENJOYED THE COZY, RAINY MORNING. MY MOST FAVORITE THING IS SUNSHINE ON SATURDAY MORNINGS, BUT IF WE CAN’T ENJOY SUNSHINE, THE EXTREME OPPOSITE IS NICE TOO.

ROUX

^ONE OF ROUX’S FAVORITE THINGS IS LOOKING OUT THE WINDOW IN THE OFFICE AND WATCHING THE RAIN FALL. HE’S SO CUTE.

LANE MADE A DELICIOUS FRITTATA, FILLED WITH A WEEKS WORTH OF LEFTOVERS AND I USED THE TIME TO DO SOME TIDY-ING UP AROUND THE HOUSE. A FEW HOURS LATER, WE DECIDED WE NEEDED TO GET OUT OF THE HOUSE FOR SOME REASON OR ANOTHER AND WITH NO REAL PLACE TO GO, WE ENDED UP FURNITURE SHOPPING FOR A NEW CHAIR IN OUR DEN. ONE THING WE WERE BLESSED WITH (AMONG MANY OTHER THINGS) WAS GREAT HAND-ME-DOWN FURNITURE. IN ADDITION TO¬†OUR GORGEOUS ETHAN ALLEN COUCH AND OTTOMAN/COFFE TABLE (THANKS MARCI AND TAYLOR), WE ALSO HAVE A LEATHER RECLINER AND AN OVERSIZED UPHOLSTERED CHAIR THAT WERE ALL GIVEN TO US. THE¬†CHAIR HAS DEFINITELY SEEN BETTER DAYS AND ALTHOUGH IT IS MY DARLING ROUX’S FAVORITE SPOT, IT SIMPLY MUST GO. LUCKILY, WE FOUND A GREAT CHAIR ON SATURDAY THAT TICKED ALL OF OUR¬†BOXES AND ARE IN THE PROCESS OF DECIDING WHICH¬†FABRIC WE WOULD LIKE BEFORE ORDERING IT. IT’S A LOT OF PRESSURE, BUT WE HAVE NARROWED IT DOWN BETWEEN TWO OPTIONS AND HOPE TO DECIDE AND HAVE IT ORDERED THIS WEEK! ON OUR WAY HOME, WE STOPPED FOR DINNER AT OUR FAVORITE NEIGHBORHOOD MEXICAN RESTAURANT AND REWARDED OURSELVES WITH, WHAT ELSE? FRESH MARGS!

THIS MORNING AFTER CHURCH, WE HEADED TO THE OUTLET STORES TO MEET UP WITH OUR FRIEND TYLER, WHO HAPPENS TO BE IN TOWN FROM NYC. WHILE HIM AND LANE CHECKED OUT WHATEVER STORES THEY WERE LOOKING AT, I HIT UP J. CREW TO DO SOME DAMAGE. GOT TO LOVE ADDITIONAL 60% OFF SALE MERCHANDISE! AFTER PIDDLING AROUND THERE, WE STOPPED BY THE GROCERY AND THEN HEADED OVER TO TYLER’S,¬†DAD’S HOUSE TO DO SOME BBQ. IT WAS A GREAT DAY FILLED WITH LAUGHTER AND THEN SOME MORE LAUGHTER. GRATEFUL FOR GREAT FRIENDS!

WE JUST GOT BACK AND ROUX IS DYING FOR MAMA’S ATTENTION SO I AM GOING TO GO SMOTHER HIM WITH SOME LOVING NOW. ūüėČ

I HOPE EVERYONE HAS A GREAT MONDAY!!!

DIRTY THIRTY IN THE BIG APPLE

I HAVE ALWAYS THOUGHT THAT BIRTHDAYS SHOULD BE A BIG¬†CELEBRATION. NOTHING OVER-THE-TOP OR EXTRAVAGANT, BUT¬†¬†DEFINITELY¬†CELEBRATED IN A WAY THAT MAKES YOU FEEL EXTRA SPECIAL. AS A CHILD, IT MEANT CUPCAKES FOR BREAKFAST AND DINNER AT YOUR FAVORITE RESTAURANT. AS I HAVE GOTTEN OLDER, I HAVE REALIZED THAT BIRTHDAYS ARE SLOWLY¬†GOING¬†FROM BEING EXCITING TO LOOKED AT AS JUST ANOTHER DAY, ESPECIALLY WHEN YOUR BIRTHDAY FALLS ON A WORK DAY. BOO! THIS WAS JUST THE CASE FOR MY HUSBAND’S 30TH BIRTHDAY. JUST ANOTHER THURSDAY, RIGHT?

WRONG.

KEEP CELEBRATING. ANOTHER BIRTHDAY MEANS ANOTHER YEAR THAT YOU GET TO ENJOY YOUR LOVED ONES. ANOTHER YEAR TO GO NEW PLACES. ANOTHER YEAR TO ENJOY SUNSHINE ON SATURDAY MORNINGS. (MY FAVORITE THING, BY THE WAY.) IF YOU’RE LUCKY, YOU’LL HAVE MANY MORE BIRTHDAYS WHETHER YOU LIKE IT OR NOT, SO EMBRACE¬†IT!

30 YEARS YOUNG.

FOR LANE’S BIRTHDAY BREAKFAST, I MADE HIM SPECIAL ’30’ PANCAKES WHICH I¬†HAD TOO MUCH FUN MAKING AT 6 IN THE MORNING.

11088336_10203994505958638_5578862397380536124_n

AFTER WORK, WE HEADED TO OUR FAVORITE RESTAURANT AT LOUISIANA LAGNIAPPE TO MEET SOME FRIENDS FOR DINNER. THEY ALSO MAKE A GREAT OLD FASHIONED. SO DELICIOUS.

IMG_20150403_090157

LANE’S BIRTHDAY FELL RIGHT BEFORE EASTER WEEKEND, SO WE¬†WERE ABLE¬†CELEBRATE WITH LOTS OF FAMILY THAT WEEKEND, AS WELL. GOOD TIMES.

FOR HIS¬†BIRTHDAY PRESENT, I SURPRISED HIM WITH A TRIP THE FOLLOWING WEEKEND TO SOMEWHERE HE’S¬†NEVER BEEN BEFORE, NYC. I USED AIRBNB TO GET US THE CUTEST STUDIO IN THE UWS, A BLOCK FROM CENTRAL PARK. WE HAVE SOME FRIENDS AND A COUSIN¬†WHO LIVE THERE SO WE HAD GREAT COMPANY THE ENTIRE TIME. WE LANDED ON THURSDAY AFTERNOON AND BOY, WAS IT COLD! THURSDAY NIGHT WE HEADED TO DINNER AT BUDDAKAN IN CHELSEA. IT WAS SUCH A COOL ATMOSPHERE AND ONE OF OUR FAVORITE DINNER’S FROM THE TRIP.¬†FUN FACT¬†FOR MY SEX AND THE CITY PEEPS: THIS IS ALSO WHERE¬†CARRIE AND BIG¬†HELD THEIR REHEARSAL DINNER IN THE MOVIE.

IMG_20150409_202735

FRIDAY MORNING WAS COLD AND DAMP, WHICH GAVE ME THE OPPOTUNITY TO BREAK IN MY NEW MELISSA RAINBOOTS, SO THAT WAS A PLUS. GLASS HALF FULL. (THANK YOU TO NAOMI OVER AT LOVE TAZA FOR INTRODUCING ME TO THEM)

COLD & DAMP NYC MORNING

OUR MORNING PLAN WAS LIVE! WITH KELLY AND MICHAEL.

CONFESSION: THIS WAS MORE FOR ME THAN LANE. WE DID HAVE PRIORITY TICKETS THOUGH, WHICH ALLOWED US TO SKIP MOST OF THE LINE AND GOT US¬†SEATED IN THE STUDIO FIRST. I JUSTIFIED¬†DRAGGING LANE HERE¬†WITH A FEW THINGS… 1.) MICHAEL COMES FROM FOOTBALL, LANE LOVES FOOTBALL 2.) THE STUDIO WAS ONLY A FEW BLOCKS FROM OUR APARTMENT SO WE DIDN’T HAVE TO WAKE UP QUITE AS EARLY¬†3.) NICKOLAJ COSTER AKA JAMIE LANNISTER WAS¬†THE GUEST AND WE LOVE US SOME GAME OF THRONES. IN THE END WE BOTH HAD FUN AND NOW LANE CAN NOW SAY HE’S BEEN¬†APART OF¬†A LIVE STUDIO AUDIENCE.

MICHAEL EVEN TOLD HIM HAPPY BIRTHDAY! #WINNING

LIVE! WITH KELLY AND MICHAELSELFIE AT THE SHOW

THE REST OF FRIDAY¬†CONSISTED OF¬†CENTRAL PARK EXPLORING¬†FOLLOWED BY WHAT I THOUGHT WAS GOING TO BE SOME FAT, JUICY¬†BURGERS AND MILKSHAKES AT BURGER JOINT. TOO BAD THE LINE WAS SO LONG. I SWEAR THE LAST TIME I WENT IT WAS STILL SOMEWHAT OF A SECRET. IT’S BEEN A FEW YEARS, WHO KNOWS, BUT¬†AFTER ABOUT 20 MINUTES OF WAITING WE DECIDED TO SKIP OUT ON THE LINE AND HEAD TO A THAI¬†RESTAURANT THAT WE HAD PASSED ALONG THE WAY. TOPAZ THAI WAS A TINY LITTLE PLACE WITH BIG TASTE. WE LOVED IT AND SOON FORGOT ALL ABOUT THE BURGERS. PURE SERENDIPITY.

CENTRAL PARK LOVING

LEX IN CENTRAL PARK LANE IN CENTRAL PARK CENTRAL PARK

FRIDAY EVENING WE HEADED TO THE EAST VILLAGE FOR CUBAN FOOD AT CIENFUEGOS. LANE IS HALF CUBAN AND MY SWEET, BEST FRIEND, YASMINA, THOUGHT OF THIS PLACE IN HONOR OF THAT. WE WERE SEATED IN THE COZY,¬†CORNER BOOTH RIGHT BY THE BAR. THIS WAS PERFECT FOR OUR SERVER¬†SINCE,¬†BETWEEN THE SIX OF US, WE CONSUMED QUITE A BIT OF THEIR FAMOUS RUM BOWLS. AFTER DINNER, WE FOUND¬†A PUB NEAR NYU TO KEEP THE CELEBRATORY DRINKS FLOWING. I AM NOT SURE WHEN I BECAME AN OLD LADY, BUT DRINKING IN THIS¬†COLLEGE BAR SURE MADE ME FEEL LIKE ONE. I GUESS GETTING SLOPPY AND SPILLING¬†MY BEER ALL OVER THE PLACE JUST ISN’T MY THING ANYMORE. MY PARENTS¬†WILL¬†BE SO¬†PROUD.

WITH SATURDAY CAME THE BIG, BEAUTIFUL SUN. FINALLY! OH HOW I LOVE ME SOME VITAMIN D. NATURALLY, I NEEDED A ROOFTOP AND A FRENCH 75, SO AFTER A FLAVORFUL BRUNCH AT MAISON KAYSER, WE WENT UP TO 230 FIFTH ROOFTOP BAR. AFTER A COUPLE HOURS, YASMINA AND I DITCHED THE GUYS AND WENT TO CHECK OUT THE RENT THE RUNWAY SAMPLE SALE, BEING THAT IT WAS IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD.

THIS WAS INTERESTING… I COMPARE IT TO¬†MY OLD SHOPPING DAYS AT FOREVER 21- YOU HAVE TO BE IN THE MOOD OR THE PEOPLE AND THE CLOTHES WILL JUST PISS YOU OFF.

THE IDEA OF THIS SALE WAS GREAT AND IM SURE PLENTY OF LADIES WALKED OUT WITH LOADS OF GREAT DEALS, BUT FROM WHAT I SAW, THE DRESSES WERE REALLY WORN DOWN SINCE THEY’VE ALREADY BEEN RENTED A BUNCH AND JUST NOT WORTH IT.¬†THIS WAS ALSO MY FIRST COMMUNAL FITTING ROOM EXPERIENCE. WHAT A HOT MESS. ONLY TWO BIG MIRRORS AND LIKE 30 WOMEN THROWING CLOTHES AROUND. NO THANKS.

230 FIFTH ROOFTOP

WE MET UP WITH THE GUYS AT THE HIGH LINE TO DO SOME MORE SITE-SEEING. ANOTHER ITEM I HAD ON THE LIST OF MUST SEES FOR LANE’S FIRST EXPERIENCE. UNFORTUNATELY, IT WAS SUPER PACKED AND WE WERE BASICALLY HAVING TO WALK IN A SINGLE-FILE LINE.¬†NOT THE ARM-IN-ARM STROLLING I HAD ENVISIONED. EVERYONE WAS COMING OUT OF HIBERNATION WITH ONE OF THE FIRST, SPRING WEEKENDS OF THE SEASON.

THE HIGH LINE VIEW FROM THE HIGH LINE

SATURDAY NIGHT, MY COUSIN EVAN HAD US OVER FOR DRINKS¬†AT HIS PLACE BEFORE DINNER. WE OOHED AND AHHED OVER THE FACT THAT THE ELEVATOR OPENED UP TO HIS APARTMENT. (IT’S THE LITTLE THINGS IN LIFE, RIGHT?!) AS THE GRACIOUS HOST THAT HE HIS, HE EVEN WENT GROCERY SHOPPING AND HAD A CHARCUTERIE AND CHEESE PLATE FOR US. WE HAD SO MUCH FUN CATCHING UP WITH EVAN/TRYING TO FACETIME ALL OUR FAMILY (TO NO AVAIL)¬†THAT BY THE TIME WE GOT TO EATALY FOR DINNER, THEY WERE CLOSED. WHOOPSIE! PLAN B WAS DINNER AT L’EXPRESS, A 24-HR FRENCH RESTAURANT. HOW COOL, RIGHT? IN LOUISIANA, OUR ONLY OPTION FOR 24 HOUR DINING IS THE¬†WAFFLE HOUSE! AFTER DINNER, WE WENT TO COMEDY CELLAR FOR OUR 12:45AM SHOW. EVEN THOUGH LOUIS CK DIDN’T POP-IN AND SURPRISE US, IT WAS STILL A FANTASTIC TIME. WHO DOESN’T LOVE LAUGHING?

PARK AVE

SUNDAY MORNING BROUGHT ANOTHER GORGEOUS DAY. WE MET AT WATERFRONT BICYCLE SHOP IN THE WEST VILLAGE RIGHT ON THE HUDSON RIVER. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS PLACE FOR BIKE RENTALS. THEY FIT YOU TO A BIKE, GIVE YOU WHATEVER ACCESSORIES NEEDED (I REQUESTED A BASKET ON THE FRONT OF MINE) AND THEN YOU ARE ON YOUR WAY.

BIKES ALONG THE HUDSON

FOLLOWING THE HUDSON RIVER WE WENT SOUTH AND WRAPPED AROUND THE ISLAND TO THE BROOKLYN BRIDGE.

BIKE FRIENDS IN FRONT OF LADY LIBERTY

WE MADE OUR WAY¬†OVER THE BRIDGE, HAD A PICNIC AT THE BROOKLYN BRIDGE PARK, (THANK YOU YASMINA FOR THE PERFECT BAGEL SANDWICHES- HIT THE SPOT AND THEN SOME) THEN HEADED BACK OVER ON THE MANHATTAN BRIDGE. WALKING THE BRIDGES IS COOL, I’M SURE, BUT TREKKING UP THE BRIDGE IS SO WORTH THE EXCITEMENT OF COASTING DOWNHILL AT HIGH SPEEDS WHILE RINGING YOUR BIKE BELL AT THE OBLIVIOUS PEDESTRIANS, WANDERING INTO YOUR BIKE LANE. SERIOUSLY, SUCH A THRILL!

BROOKLYN BRIDGE PARK

WE RODE THROUGH WASHINGTON SQUARE PARK ON OUR WAY BACK TO THE BIKE SHOP, WHICH WAS PACKED WITH THRONGS OF PEOPLE ENJOYING ANOTHER PERFECT DAY. 13 MILES AND 5 1/2 HOURS LATER WE RETURNED OUR BIKES AND HEADED BACK TO THE APARTMENT.

AS IF WE DIDN’T DO ENOUGH ON SUNDAY, WE HAD ABOUT 45 MINUTES TO FRESHEN UP¬†AND HEAD TO THE BRONX FOR THE YANKEES/REDSOX GAME. WE DINED ON HOTDOGS AND BEER (WHEN IN ROME…)¬†AND HAD AN INCREDIBLE¬†TIME. THIS WAS SUCH A COOL EXPERIENCE AND EVEN THOUGH WE WERE TIRED FROM THE DAY, I AM SO GLAD THAT WE FIT THIS INTO OUR TRIP.
